Stop following the crowd
alright first thing first, when you land in a new city dont immediately go for those “top 10 must see” lists. seriously they are overrated and half the time you just end up in a crowd of other touristy people all trying to take the same pic. i mean sure take a photo but dont make that your life mission. sometimes just wandering works better, like just go left instead of right and see what happens. i once just followed a smell of coffee in lisbon and ended up in this tiny bookstore with weird comics and travel books i didnt even know existed. if i was just following the guidebooks i would’ve missed it for sure.
eat where the locals eat
food is the fastest way to feel a city. trust me on this. forget flashy restaurants with menus in 10 languages, go for the small messy places. even street stalls, like the ones with no english menu. locals eat there and the food is better. cheaper too which is nice bc traveling is expensive if you dont wanna live on instant noodles. i remember in bangkok this tiny noodle shop hidden behind parking lot, couldnt read a word, guy just pointed and smiled. it was amazing. also don’t forget to take pics, but dont try to make it perfect, like show the chaos too. maybe someone spilling soup or a kid screaming, thats real life.
talk to people not just apps
so many tourists just hide behind maps and google translate. yeah its fine but you miss everything if you dont talk to people. i talked to a street vendor in mexico city once and he showed me this park with kids playing soccer and people dancing. i wouldnt have found it otherwise. also trying to speak their language even badly makes people smile and that feels nice. i sometimes just nod and smile and it works 90% of the time lol.
use public transport like you live there
nothing screams tourist more than calling taxis all the time. learn the bus or subway map or even rent a bike. its cheaper and fun. i once got on a random tram in berlin and ended up in this neighborhood with record shops and murals, totally accidental but coolest thing ever. seriously just ride like locals do, you see so much more. also there are weird twitter/instagram trends about secret metro murals, following that can be fun too.
dive into the local culture, weird stuff
be curious even if its awkward. go to small theater shows in the local language or a tiny art gallery. sometimes festivals make no sense at all but thats the fun part. i was in prague for a medieval festival, adults in chainmail chasing kids around, weird but hilarious. i have no idea what was happening most of the time but thats memory. social media can’t capture that properly lol.
stay somewhere local
hotels are ok but if you really want the real experience try airbnb or hostels or even guesthouses. sometimes hosts are super helpful and show secret stuff. i stayed in kyoto in a tiny flat, host made breakfast and told me about festivals, cherry blossoms, stuff like that. hotels dont do that. also being in a local neighborhood leads to random finds, like dog parades or street markets nobody online is talking about.
capture moments not just photos
this is cheesy but real. listen, smell, touch the city too. take pics if you want but dont obsess over it. i spent afternoon in istanbul just sitting near bosphorus, kids skipping rocks, fishermen, seagulls. zero photos but memory forever. if you post, post messy stuff like spilled coffee, half eaten sandwich, trash near mural, that’s life. real life not magazine shots.
trust your instincts (and feet)
end of the day its about instincts. feel a street, if looks bad skip it. if it feels cool go in. walk, eat, talk, explore, repeat. theres no formula, just curiosity and maybe getting lost a bit. getting lost is fun, accidents lead to stories. that’s the magic.
so yeah basically if you wanna explore like a local dont follow buses, ignore top 10 lists, eat messy, talk to people, use public transport, trust your wandering instincts and embrace chaos. its messy, fun, real. and thats the stuff worth remembering, not just pics for insta likes.
